Baby carriers from Newborn to Toddler

Woman discussing baby carriers, holding grey fabric. Child sits nearby. Text: "Baby Carriers for baby #2 from newborn to toddler."

Video featuring all the carriers I have for Baby #2 for newborn phase until toddlerhood -

My video on Youtube features all the baby carriers I have for Baby #2 that I will be using from newborn, the phase after newborn (about 3 to 6 months), the carrier from when baby can sit independently, what I use to back carry and more. This blog is a list of all the carriers featured in that video - for my recommendations and thoughts of the carriers - please see the video.

Newborn carriers

For the initial newborn phase I use a stretchy wrap - specifically I use the Momcozy Baby Wrap. I only recommend this carrier for the initial few weeks and not to be used after 3 months.

Please give a lot of consideration to how to baby carry safety. Here is a great image from Wearmy baby.co.uk.

For the newborn phase when baby is a bit stronger I have the Ergo Embrace Newborn Carrier.

Next phase

I have three ring slings to use.

  1. Wildbird ring sling - 100% linen

  2. True North ring sling - 100% linen (might be discontinued).

  3. Uppymama ring sling - Woven

If I were to get another carrier for this phase I would get a woven wrap.

Hip carrier?

I have a Tushbaby hip carrier. I thought I would love it, but it is my least used carrier, and I don't necessarily recommend getting it - but it has the potential to be useful in some situations. See video for full details.

Can you tell I am terrified of heights? haha

Other carriers used for front & back carry

These three are my most used carriers.

  1. Ergobaby Carrier - Omni classic (formerly Omni 360). I do not world face carry (carry baby with them facing outward while on your front) with this or any other carrier. I also did not use the newborn insert.

  2. Sakura Bloom Scout - This was my favourite carrier until I got the Ombuhimo. I mostly used this carrier for back carrying.

  3. Sakura Bloom Ombuhimo - my favourite carrier and we still use it with our toddler who will be 3 in a month.

The Ombuhimo is a high back carry carrier which is why I love it, but you can also use it on your front when baby is smaller. Back carry in a structured carrier is only recommended from when baby can sit independently.

The Sakura Bloom carriers are expensive (mine is 100% linen with leather on the arms). I definitely think they are worth the price tag, BUT I do recommend buying them second hand if you can find what you like to reduce the cost. I bought both of mine off the Sakura Bloom Canada BST (Buy Sell Trade) group.

There are other great companies that make ombuhimo's as well - like the Lenny Lamb one (this was my 2nd option if I couldn't get the Sakura Bloom).

Safety considerations & more resources

I highly recommend joining the Babywearing 101 Facebook group for safety tips and fit checks to ensure you are carrying a way that is safe and best for your and your baby's body.

You can also look into attending baby wearing meet ups - there are ones in most major cities.

For most carriers you can find good tutorials and tips on Youtube.

I think the Sakura Bloom Scout & Omhubimo are better for back carrying, but I did use the Ergo Omni as well.

Baby carrying is such an enriching experience for you and your kiddo on your parenting journey - I highly recommend it. Not just carrying but doing it in a way that really works for both of you.
